What Causes Fan Motor Problems with My AC?

Sunday, September 29th, 2013

The development of affordable residential air conditioning in the 1950’s was one of the reasons so many people were willing to build their homes in beautiful southern Arizona. If you live here, you know all too well an AC is one of the most important parts of your house, keeping you cool throughout the year. If vital components of your air conditioner start to fail, you need to have the problem identified and fixed as soon as possible. For Phoenix AC repair, count on the skilled technicians at Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning to get you out of the heat and back into the cool!

Fixing fan motor problems is a common repair we have to make.

Air conditioners use two fans: a blower fan inside, and a fan in the outdoor unit that helps with releasing hot air to the outside. Problems with the motors that run either fan will disrupt the heat exchange cycle necessary for your AC to work properly. One of the main reasons a fan motor might malfunction is dirt inside the cabinet. The air filter normally protects the AC interior from debris, but if it becomes clogged or breaks, pollutants forming inside can damage the motors and make them run less efficiently.

Like any motor, an air conditioner fan motor can become overheated if it works too hard and doesn’t receive proper maintenance. If your AC has worked for you most of the summer, the stress could cause the fan motors to burn out. We recommend scheduling regular maintenance, once or twice annually, to keep the motors in good condition so they last for many years.

If a fan motor isn’t starting at all, the trouble may not be in the motor itself, but the start capacitor. This cylindrical device, about the size of a soda can, sends the voltage to the motors that starts them working. Damaged wiring can cause a capacitor to fail, and the motor will not be able to start.

Prevention is the best way you can avoid troubles like these. Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning offers a quality maintenance program that will keep your fan motors, as well as the rest of your AC, in tip-top shape. Our seven decades of experience make us a great choice for Phoenix, AZ air conditioning repair.

Common Duct Contaminants to Look for

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Theoretically, your ducts should constitute part of a sealed system. Air moves from your central HVAC unit through the ducts into the rest of your house, exiting through the vents and warming or cooling your home in the process. In a perfect world, that wouldn’t be affected by anything else. Sadly, we don’t live in a perfect world. Leaks and contaminants spring up, reducing your system’s efficiency and lowering the quality of air in the process. You can address these problems with professional duct cleaning. Glendale, AZ has its share of qualified technicians who can perform such operations, but it helps if you know what common duct contaminants to look for, and how they might affect your ducts’ ability to function.

  • Dust. The bulk of duct contaminants is dust, which gathers as air moves through the ducts. Over time, it builds up: passing into your home whenever you turn on your HVAC unit and lowering the quality of your air in the process. Dust can come from any number of places, and might include pet dander, tracked-in dirt and dust from your HVAC unit in particular. In Arizona, the sand and dust of the desert are a constant presence, and will invariably find their way into your ducts by hook or by crook.
  • Pollen. We don’t have as much of a problem with pollen here in Arizona as other parts of the country do, but local gardens can still produce pollen, and similar allergens can be found in duct systems as well. Check the conditions in your local neighborhood if this is a concern, and note the kinds or plants or trees likely to product airborne allergens.
  • Insect droppings. Bugs often thrive in out-of-the-way places in your homes, which includes the duct work. Over time, droppings from roaches, dust mites and other pests can accumulate in your ducts, then move through your household when the air blows.

Regardless of the source of contaminant, the Glendale duct cleaning experts at Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning can get rid of it with a solid cleaning. Glendale AZ falls under our service area, as does most of the greater Phoenix area. Once you know the common duct contaminants to look for, give us a call and let us get rid of them for you properly.

How Can a Bad Capacitor Cause Me to Need AC Repairs?

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Your home’s air conditioning system is a complicated piece of equipment. Its main purpose is to remove heat from your home and then exhaust it outside. In order to do that, it uses two fans as well as a compressor—each with their own motor. Attached to each motor is a capacitor that performs an essential function. We wanted to share a little bit about what capacitors are and why they’re important to your air conditioning system. Give us a call here at Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning if you need any Paradise Valley air conditioning repair services. Otherwise, read on below to learn more.

Paradise Valley Air Conditioning Repair: Bad Capacitors

If you remember the movies Back to the Future, you may recall that one of the key components of the DeLorean time machine was the flux capacitor which required 1.21 gigawatts of power in order to travel through time. Similarly (kind of), your air conditioning system’s capacitors store an electrical charge and then they deliver it to their attached motor to give it a boost of power.

Each motor in your air conditioning system has its own capacitor that is about the size and shape of a can of soda pop. If the capacitors stop working, these are a few of the issues that can happen.

  • AC producing warm air – If your AC is blowing warm air into your home, it could be that the capacitor for your compressor has stopped working. This would prevent your system from getting the correct pressurization of the refrigerant to allow it to absorb heat out of your home’s air.
  • No cooling – If you aren’t getting any airflow from the registers in your floor or ceiling it could be that the capacitor for the indoor fan isn’t working. If this is the case, you will likely hear the outdoor unit turn on but the indoor unit of your AC remains silent. It could be making a buzzing noise which is likely the sound of the motor trying to operate on its own.

If you need Paradise Valley air conditioning repair services, make sure that you call the experts at Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning.

3 Ways Insulation Improves Your Apache Junction Home

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

Insulation is an ideal way to keep your home warm and to retain energy from your heating system. This is a special consideration in Apache Junction, where the desert nights can get surprisingly chilly. Insulation can improve your home in a number of additional ways, not all of which are obvious at first glance.

Call Goettl Good Guys for all of your insulation needs!

Here are 3 of the most important reasons you need insulation.

  • It keeps things cool as well as warm. We think of insulation as most useful in the winter, which doesn’t have much bearing here in the desert except at night. But insulation doesn’t just help your home retain heat. It helps it stay cool in the hot summer days when you’re running your air conditioner. Good insulation reduces the strain on your AC unit, lowering your monthly bills and extending the life of your air conditioner in the bargain.
  • It acts as soundproofing. This doesn’t apply to every home, but if you live in an attached unit such as a duplex of a townhome, if you have a lot of large echo-y spaces in your home, and/or if you have small noisy children (of all ages), then soundproofing becomes a significant factor in your overall comfort. Insulation muffles sound through the walls quite well, reducing ambient noise and making your living space quieter than it might be otherwise.
  • Fire protection. Insulated walls tend to resist the spread of fire, making your home safer in the bargain. Furthermore, insulation properly wrapped around hot pipes protects surrounding material from burning.

All of these factors come on top of saving you money on your monthly bills, as well as improving the overall resale value of your home. A reliable contractor can explain the different options available to you and discuss ancillary concerns such as proper sealing and moisture issues. The Goettl Good Guys have experience in insulation installation, and can travel to homes in Apache Junction and throughout the greater Phoenix area. If you need insulation in your Apache Junction home or are experiencing problems with your current insulation, pick up the phone and call us today for an appointment.

Why We Celebrate Labor Day

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

We hope our present and future customers had a pleasant Labor Day this September. We know how hard you work to ensure that you and your loved ones have a good life, and we feel the same way about the work that we do throughout the year. Home comfort is our business, so you can rely on our technicians to take care of any issues that you may have. To many of us, Labor Day means BBQ, the start of the football season, and spending quality time with our friends and family. But there is much more to this holiday, and we wanted to share its true purpose with you.

Like many US holidays, the origins of Labor Day are somewhat disputed. While many cite Peter J. McGuire’s (of the American Federation of Labor) suggestion of a demonstration and picnic as the inaugural Monday, others cite Matthew Maguire, then secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York. In the wake of the massive and violent Pullman Strike of 1894, which pitted George Pullman and US Marshals and Military against workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company outside Chicago. Designated as a federal holiday by Congress and President Grover Cleveland in 1894, a mere six days after the strike ended, Labor Day has since become a way of recognizing the contribution that hard working Americans have made to this country.

We wish you all the best, and hopefully you took the time to relax, eat some good food, and take a load off.
